The AWA project, drawn up by Batlleiroig, MPC Arquitectos, Lain, and IC3 Ingenieros, has won the bid to redevelop the Guiniguada promenade in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The scheme revolves around water, making it its cultural and conceptual axis while integrating heritage, ecological, and urban values.
AWA proposes a large-scale urban and landscaping intervention covering over 40,000 square meters of the Guiniguada ravine. The current road will become a new green corridor, creating a naturalized landscape in the heart of the city. The aim is to reactivate the historical center and organically connect the Vegueta and Triana neighborhoods through nature.
The new avenue is structured in three distinct areas: El Jardín (north zone), a community meeting place that reconnects the surrounding quarters by means of greenery and recreational spots; El Paseo (central axis), which links up two historic points of the ravine – the Stone Bridge and the old Wooden Bridge – and is designed to serve as a venue for outdoor exhibitions and cultural activities; and La Plaza (the stretch between the Pérez Galdós Theater and the Vegueta Market), a large, 1,940-square-meter civic agora that restores urban continuity between both sides of the ravine by lowering the ground level and raising a huge pergola.
