El Cercao rural dwelling in Arahal

In Arahal, a municipality in the province of Seville that takes its name from the Arabic term Ar-rahal, meaning a place along a path where one stops to rest, stands this 1920s house which José Luis Daroca Bruño and Jaime Daroca Guerrero have refurbished. Because the existing construction was in a state of ruin, they inverted the domestic uses. The new dwelling, a single-floor, U-shaped bay, embraces the old construction from the west and props it up, structurally consolidating its walls through a bundle of hoops and footings. The old rooms became free spaces or courtyards of the new house. The old walls were preserved and braced, while the roofs were partly demolished and partly restored, including the pitched tiled one to the east, with a chimney rising over it.
