The extension of the Isenberg School of Management building seeks to bring together departments at the Amherst campus of the University of Massachusetts while creating a new workspace for students where events and lectures can be held. The program also includes classrooms and halls for the various specialized centers that make up the prestigious business school.
The project results from the circular tracing of a floor plan, like a donut, around the north end. This configuration establishes two different points of connection with the current building, a strategy which helps to fluidly integrate the volume into the existing circulation system, although for fire safety reasons the constructions must be separated a certain distance. The complex is rounded off with a central garden courtyard.
The most characteristic element of the project is the facade, with its composition of large vertical pieces of metal. The pattern is deformed at the entrance on Presidents Drive, slanting progressively to delimit a spacious foyer that serves to give a formal nuance to the transition from the preexisting building.
