The project further develops the idea of ‘Vancouverism,’ a local policy that aims to generate a dense and balanced urban fabric in the center, foster civic activity in the public realm, and preserve views, from the city, of its natural surroundings. Vancouver House, the first example of Vancouverism 2.0, presents a mixed-use podium – fragmented into three volumes rising on plots delimited by the Granville Bridge overpass – and a slender residential tower 150 meters tall. The project endeavors to transform a residual area – dominated by transport infrastructures – into a new urban landmark. The tower’s base is set back 30 meters from the highway, dictating a triangular footprint, but as it shoots up, the building progressively takes on a rectangular form, producing its characteristic warped profile of stacked blocks.
At street level, the complex of offices, shops, and leisure amenities is broken up by a succession of intimately-scaled interior plazas and pathways that connect with the network of existing streets, giving the neighborhood a variety of open-air and covered spaces that can be used for a diversity of events and are actively integrated into the life of the city.
