This project for Saint Denis, on Réunion Island, is based on an interpretation of city structures as living textures able to recombine and mutate their codes through procedures analogous to those of molecular biology. To address the cultural multiplicity of this island, an in vitro design is planned, consisting of cells measuring 30m2 each and grouped in generic blocks with ordered codes. To define the distribution of programmatic densities, he situates a regular scheme of vehicular traffic paths and an altogether formless one for pedestrians on top of the existing urban fabric. The resulting density map – determining the percentages of use and circulation per lot – is hybridized with the blocks, inducing local mutations on them which have the effect of deforming and shifting services and dwellings, thereby creating new relationships...
