Vocational Training Building at DAT Alierta in Zaragoza
Magén ArquitectosThe scheme ‘Ágora Verde’ – by Magén Arquitectos – has won the competition for the vocational-training building of a digital campus integrated into the new Aragonese Technology District (DAT), along the Río Ebro university premises in Zaragoza.
The project was selected from a pool of eleven submitted. The second prize went to ‘S1nerg1as,’ by the Barcelona-based studio Sulkin Marchissio, and the third to ‘Habitar,’ by Idom Consulting. The winning teamis eligible to sign the contract for the drafting of the basic project and the construction thereof, in addition to receiving a money prize of 6,000 euros.
The jury particularly appreciated the design of the central atrium, thought out to foster encounters and interaction, built with timber and lit naturally through a stepped section, which frames the entrance to the building.
The proposal presents a clear-cut, efficient, and flexible layout, structured in a perimetral corridor surrounding a large central space for circulation and socializing. This core is formed by a stepped atrium-courtyard, which connects the building’s different levels diagonally and gives direct views of the landscaped roofs.
The building is to be equipped with cutting-edge technology, including robotics and additive manufacturing laboratories for 3D printing, an immersive room with virtual and mixed reality, a gaming classroom for designing videogames, hardware and electronics workshops, a small- format data center, and fourteen classrooms, twelve individual videoconference rooms for virtual training, and spaces for student and graduate entrepreneurship. The complex will also include three business incubators and a coworking area.
This new facility will allow relocating the digital vocational-training center from its current home in the Aragón Pavilion at Expo 92.
