Catalunya Media City is emerging as a hub for production, research, and training in the audiovisual, digital, and video-game sectors. This ambitious initiative is articulated in two principal operations: renovation of the historic Sant Adrià del Besós thermal power plant, in accordance with Garcés de Seta Bonet y Marvel’s ‘El la nave va’ scheme ; and construction of two large sets at the Parc Audiovisual de Catalunya in Terrassa, for which a competition will be held.
The winning design in the call to enlarge and adapt the turbine hall of the Tres Chimeneas site takes its name from the Federico Fellini film E la nave va. This intervention is the centerpiece of Catalunya Media City, which is programmed to be completed by the end of 2028. A respectful refurbishment of an icon of Catalan industrial heritage is combined with a new building to house educational spaces and areas for business projects linked to digital culture. The project also includes modern facilities for audiovisual production and an impressive 17-meter-high, 5,600-square-meter open-plan hall for exhibitions and events of various kinds.
Garcés de Seta Bonet y Marvel’s work incorporates transversal cuts that make the premises more porous and permeable, letting users and neighbors cross the building and connecting the city to the sea. The roof is covered with 4,500 square meters of solar panels, in line with a commitment to sustainability and innovation.
