Tucked into a hillside in West Austin, the building is organized around a three-story sculptural staircase that acts as the hinge point of the house, with rooms and hallways unfolding from it on every floor. The practice of the Spaniard Juan Miró and the Puerto Rican Miguel Rivera designed the staircase to be assembled in the factory and transported to the site when the structure was completed. The turns and swerves of the nucleus produce different views of the residential space. There is a dominant use of concrete and metal in the outer claddings, while the warmth of wood prevails inside. The lines between interior and exterior are diluted by large windows and folding surfaces.
