Lennar, the homebuilding giant, and Icon, wose specialty is large-scale 3D printing, have together announced that a project for a hundred single-familiy houses in Austin, Texas, designed in collaboration with BIG, the firm of the Danish architect Bjarke Ingels. The project is to provide a quick response to the growing demand for affordable dwellings. Each unit will be printed through Icon’s Vulcan technology, which uses controlled robotics. Complying with requirements stipulated by the International Building Code (IBC), the buildings will be energy efficient, with pitched roofs incorporating photovoltaic panels. Construction will start in 2022 and the result, says the Texan firm ICON, will be the world’s largest neighborhood of 3D-printed homes.
