In 2017, BIG won the competition to design the historical San Pellegrino premises in the Italian Alps. The operation includes the construction of a visitor center, production zones, offices, and a bridge over the Brembo. The complex is unified by emphatic repetition of slender concrete arches that go back to classical tradition and 20th-century Italian rationalism. These elements are positioned like ribs, in such a way that the gaps – sealed with transparent materials – frame views of the river valley and make the building’s users feel immersed in the natural landscape. The diameter of the galleries varies progressively, giving rise to a dynamic sequence of arcades in which the different parts of the program are distributed.
Besides giving new life to the company’s image, the project seeks to link the industrial facilities to the San Pellegrino Terme and make it an iconic gateway to the village. Hence, close to the deposits is an elevated piazza – the symbolic heart of the intervention – where a huge sculpture will be raised, formed by various layers of natural rock representing the stages of the journey that water travels from the mountain’s snowy summit to the spring at its foot.
