The tourism boom of the recent years has immersed the city of Puerto de la Cruz in a process of urban degradation that is cause for worry. This proposal, winner of a public competition expressly organized to address the situation, arose in response to the continuous mistreatment of the coast, seeking a gradual recovery based on respect for the energy of the sea and for the local economy, over and above a mere aesthetic make-over.
The current of the Atlantic is used, its movement studied in order to capitalize on sea energy for the renewal of harbor waters and the resulting reactivation of maritime life in the zone. The operation brings activity back to the coast by creating the conditions for the reencounter of city and sea, and forming a new urban and economic center that helps solve the lack of connection between the various elements currently scattered along the coastline (between the new port and the old fishing neighborhood). For a correct adaptation of the intervention, a study was made of the characteristics of the local population as well as economic and social conditions, turning the port into a focal point in the protection of the interests of the region’s inhabitants.
