On the campus of Waseda University in Honio, a city in Japan’s Saitama Prefecture, this three-story building contains facilities for sport training and meetings. The gym had to have natural indirect lighting, ideal for physical exercises done indoors, so the scheme blocked intake of strong direct sunlight. To meet this objective, four structural ‘tubes’ were built around the perimeter of the arena to harbor air-conditioning, lighting, and sound equipment. Rising to a maximum height of 18.55 meters, the construction of fair-faced concrete presents round holes varying in size, and there is no other decorative feature or color.
