The Plus furniture factory in Magnor

BIG Bjarke Ingels Group

The Danish architecture office BIG has designed a factory for the furniture manufacturer Vestre, inserted into a forest near the village of Magnor, in eastern Norway. It has a built area of 7,000 square meters, and takes its name, The Plus, from its cross shape. Four arms connected at the center serve different purposes: wood factory, assembly, color factory, warehouse). The design makes for an efficient and flexible workflow, and enables visitors to observe the production process and go up to the green roofs, where 900 photovoltaic panels have been installed. It took 18 months to carry out, using local mass timber, low-carbon concrete, and recycled steel. The factory has an efficiency rating of A+ and will generate about 250,000 kWh of renewable energy a year.
