The cultural Center of Constitución, located on the southern side of a plaza in the city center, is one of the public buildings completed within the PRES initiative (plan for sustainable reconstruction) launched after the earthquake and the tsunami of 2010. More specifically, the Cultural Center was one of the interventions that the citizens themselves gave priority to in the surveys carried out to guide the process for urban reconstruction. Its central location is the first representative element, reflecting the new civic character this type of facility will give the city.
The building is designed as a double-height portico, consisting of a series of wood ribs forming an oblong and regular prism. This composition seeks recovering the portico as one of the characteristic spaces in institutional buildings, and which also fulfills an environmental, urban, and symbolic role. The interior of the volume is divided into several independent and flexible spaces that the community can use and organize freely. The building deliberately reflects simplicity and austerity, showing that it is meant to remain and that its design will always be up-to-date.
