Old Somerset schoolhouse in Pitcombe

Bindloss Dawes

The Old School House of Pitcombe, in the English county of Somerset, was built in 1864. The listed building was turned into a house in the 1940s, and enlarged thirty years later with a bedroom wing. This extension has been demolished and replaced by a timber volume that draws inspiration from the original building, reinterpreting it in a contemporary language. The new addition presents a timber frame clad in English sweet chesnut, which over time will take on a silvery gray patina. In the upper floor, the wooden skin presents a vertical and open pattern that lets rainwater pass through the cladding and drain away through hidden gutters. Downstairs, the cladding is aligned horizontally with wider closed boards that help to break up the overall building’s scale and massing.
