Gelephu International Airport
BIG Bjarke Ingels Group- Type Infraestructure Airport
- City Gelephu
- Country Bhutan
Bhutan’s second international airport, located in Gelephu, is strategically located near the Bhutan-Indian border, surrounded by lush subtropical forests, mountains, and rivers. Spanning 68,000 square meters, it is part of the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) masterplan, also drawn up by BIG.
With the Himalayas as backdrop, the new airport presents a modular, diagrid-type structure in wood, the silhouette of which, from afar, resembles the mountain range. The roof incorporates photovoltaic panels, efficiently harnessing solar energy.
The facade takes inspiration from the kachen, a wooden pillar of intricate design that embodies Bhutanese architectural heritage. Every element of solid timber is carved and colored in accordance with traditional craft and carpentry, and adorned with three types of dragons representing the country’s past, present, and future.
Named the Forest Spine, an interior courtyard divides the terminal into two sections: tbe west side for domestic flights and the east for international travel. The division offers travelers a connection to nature by means of tranquil green spaces, a treetop walkway, and indigenous fauna.
The airport is bathed in natural light thanks to a grand triple-height entry, expansive windows, and skylights. Indoor and outdoor lounges provide peaceful spaces for yoga, meditation, and gong baths, reflecting Bhutan’s characteristic values of happiness and psychological well-being.
Adapted to the subtropical climate of Southern Bhutan, the airport features passive systems of energy management typical of traditional Bhutanese architecture, encouraging natural airflow. Its wooden structure absorbs moisture from the air, helping to regulate indoor humidity. Outside, extended eaves give shade and guard against heavy rainfall. Opening day is programmed for 2029.
