Valencia-based Piano Piano Studio, headed by Maria Donnini and Maria Grifo, was commissioned to insert a dwelling between party walls on an elongated rectangular corner plot in Foios, a municipality in the comarca of La Huerta Norte. The site conditions determine the orientation and massing of the construction, resulting in a house with a long side facing west and a short one south. It follows the neighboring homes’ repetition of facade materials, forms, and rhythms, but inverts the traditional order of corner buildings in the area, with two parts separated by a patio: the taller, main one contains the actual domestic uses, while the smaller construction, at the corner, is storage. In this way the new house – all of 249 square meters – presents a larger volume northward, and southward a terrace over a carport which, in compliance with regulations, is covered with an openwork false facade.
On the right side of the central patio are private spaces that connect with a protected smaller patio featuring a fruit tree. A straight staircase under one of the roof’s slopes leads to the upper floor, where there is a terrace and a generous flexible space.
