In the presence of Park Seo-Bo (Yecheon, 1931) – a leading figure of South Korean contemporary art, father of the Dansaekhwa movement of minimalist monochrome painting – the first stone has been laid for the museum that will be home to his legacy, for the design of which the Canarian architect Fernando Menis drew inspiration from the artist's introspective work and the volcanic nature of Jeju Island. The building is mostly underground, executed with local materials that blend with the surroundings. The interiors take in daylight and present a play of shadows.
On the outside, the concrete volume is broken up into two parts. A compressed foyer leads to a more fluid space where the offices are, along with a garden. The museum is organized by a linear staircase that takes the visitor on a walk through natural light, reflections, and backlights.
The first below-grade floor includes two large exhibition halls dominated by the color white. One emulates a cube, the other adapts to the morphology of the concrete volume from the exterior. Descending along the second straight flight of the main stairs, the journey ends in a generous multipurpose room.
