Offices and hotel in Berlin

Max Dudler

Located in Berlin’s Schöneberg neighborhood, this new construction mends an urban fabric that has needed repairing since the 1990s, rising, as it does, beside a heretofore lone office building – the Platinum, a work of the architect Jürgen Sawade – and fusing with it to form an altogether new composition. The new building presents a 5-floor base, but keeps rising on its north and south, in symmetry, each ‘overgrowth’ reaching 11 floors and then lowering towards the middle every 2, in steps, back to 5 floors. The uniform facade of brick and light tones gives it a sculptural character. This aesthetic and tactile treatment of the exterior is executed with details that arise from its structural function, excluding redundant decorations. The deep-set windows create a play of lights and shadows in a regular rhythmic repetition of vertical and horizontal bands.
