Emac Arquitectura

The firm Emac -- acronym for Mediterranean space for contemporary architecture and headed by Miguel Martínez Castillejo and Pau Batalla Soriano -- in ad hoc union with the architecture and engineering company Octógono Castellón has won the competition for ideas for the building/rebuilding – on its existing site – of a preschool and primary school in La Pobla Llarga, a municipality in the Valencian comarca of Ribera Alta. Across Parc Joan Fuster is an access plaza. To orient the playground courts optimally, the building rises on the northwest part of the plot. The horizontal, one-floor building presents two tablets connected by a longitudinal courtyard, intensifying the relationship between interior and exterior. The main classrooms in the southeast part are connected by a pergola to the rest of the school in the northwest. The gym is conceived as a finishing touch and vertical counterpoint. The project incorporated passive strategies for reducing energy consumption, including pergolas, canopies, adjustable louvers, cross ventilation, and vegetation, and installed systems for rainwater reuse in drip irrigation. The materials used – such as ceramic, wood, laminated plaster, and glass – are recyclable or recycled.
