Along the A13 highway outside Andeer, a municipality in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, the firm Herzog & de Meuron will build a chapel with four 10-meter-high white walls positioned at angles to support each other in a play of inclinations. Challenging traditional places of workship, the Autobahnkirche is designed as a response to the setting and without religious signs or symbols. One entrance is on ground level, facing west, and another leads the visitor through a spiral staircase. With 280 square meters distributed in two levels, a sequence of underground spaces is embedded into the hillside, with apertures to let in daylight. The main space opens out to the landscape with panoramic views, and features a room-height pane of red class.
