More than six decades and one hundred works built on four continents attest to the extensive and prolific career of Renzo Piano at the helm of his ‘Building Workshop.’ The fourth monograph devoted to the oeuvre of Renzo Piano Building Workshop contains a selection of fifteen works and projects presented in a circular itinerary around the globe that begins and ends in Paris, the city that made the Genoese architect known worldwide. A special tour de force that goes from the sculptural profile of the Courthouse to the transparent compactness of the Paris Nord Hospital, via big cities like London (Paddington Square), New York (The Forum), Los Angeles (Academy Museum of Motion Pictures), Moscow (GES2), Istanbul (Modern Art Museum), and Geneva (CERN), without forgetting his own country (Bologna hospital) and hometown (Port Control Tower and San Giorgio Bridge), nor the Mediterranean (three hospitals in Greece) or places farther away from globalization like Uganda (Children’s Surgical Hospital in Entebbe). A long professional path navigating very different contexts and scales, and that is dissected here in three essays, by Luis Fernández-Galiano and by the Italian critic Fulvio Irace.
