Located in the Korean Strait, the island of Jeju is a natural wonder whose unique ecosystem is the result of the eruptions of Mount Halla. Subjected to the action of meteors, solidified lava eventually begins to present the small and medium-sized earth-toned or black porous stones that are generally used by locals in erecting stone walls. In this particular project, however, the material coats the roofs of some half-buried houses in such a way that, from a distance, these dwellings simply look like big rocks, camouflaged in the natural terrain, and only as we approach them do we realize that they are actual constructions clad with fragments of rock.
Although the houses may give the visitor the impression of telluric gravity, in truth they have a light build. A slab of reinforced concrete 20 cm thick, slightly warped, forms the main structure of the roof. On this concrete slab are a layer each of wetproofing, protection, and screed 3 cm thick, and finally the Jeju stones are laid directly on top. The domestic lighting through lateral windows and overhead skylights has been complemented here by a sophisticated interplay of chiaroscuros produced by daylight in the process of penetrating the filter of stones in the eaves, conceived as pergolas.
