Refuge for birds and mammals and a water tank in Luxembourg

Aiming to blend into the place like just another tree, this project is located in a forest of the city of Luxembourg, listed as a Natura 2000 site; that is, a conservation areas for the protection of biodiversity in the European Union. With the collaboration of naturalists and ornithologists, the challenge is to integrate in this fragile context a potable-water reservoir 50 meters high and able to hold 1,000 cubic meters of liquid.

The program is divided into two volumes designed in accordance with the strictest technical specifications. One presents a skin of rough prefabricated concrete that accommodates swallows’ nests at different altitudes and facing particular directions, and a 50-meter-tall nest for peregrine falcons.

The second volume is clad in cork, which acts as a layer of thermal insulation against the tank of water. Over this is a second skin, built with untreated larchwood and made porous to facilitate nest construction for seasonal species, and on top are the roosts for bats.

The ground floor is given a permeable metal cladding. The exterior and interior paving of this zone is of rammed earth. The scheme includes a system for collecting rainwater, which is stored outside.

This work was awarded in the 13th Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism, in the Other coordinates category.
