Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts renovation in Little Rock

Studio Gang

The Chicago practice led by Jeanne Gang has overhauled and expanded the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts in Little Rock. A sculpturally folded concrete canopy unites eight existing buildings – of different periods and architectural styles – that had been added to the original museum since its construction in 1937. The concrete roof cantilevers, as if to make the building reach out to and reconnect with its surroundings. Its organic forms let light in and collect rainwater to irrigate the greenery, and it adapts to the topography in its descending graduation, all the way to the single-story restaurant, generating a covered terrace facing MacArthur Park. Clad in stone like the original facades of the museum’s first building, the main entrance leads to a courtyard that features a bronze sculpture by the British artist Henry Moore. Inside, the design presents clear connections between different museum programs.
