Xpujil market is part of an urban strategy that includes five key projects: bus stop, market, library, center for community development, and municipal presidency. To optimize resources and create a greater impact, some programs were integrated in one ensemble.
Inspired by the logic of traditional Mayan architecture, the market is laid out in covered modules of 9x9 meters, each one fit out with a central solar chimney that favors passive ventilation via thermal convection. Formed by vertical ducts crowned by glass domes, the chimneys collect solar heat to generate ascending currents that suck air from the interior and, complemented by perimetral facades of mud latticeworks, let the air and filtered light pass through.
The program places permanent shops along the perimeter and flexible commercial spaces along the central corridors. A tree-lined central avenue connects with the bus stop, creating a town hub for gathering, distribution, and economic activity. The project preserves the trees, includes rain gardens and shaded paths, and creates a replicable model of community infrastructure, based on the use of local materials and a strong connection with the social and cultural environment...[+]
