On the shore of the Bacalar Lagoon, these free-of-charge public-recreation baths present stepped limestone walls that absorb the elevation changes and form terraced viewpoints. The intervention diffuses the edges with a built complex integrated into nature.
The premises have three main elements. The first is a multipurpose palapa, a craftwork showcase of dry-palm-branch weaving and a wooden structure, which combines vernacular and contemporary architectural elements. The second is a natural pool that mitigates the intensive use of the lagoon by bathers, and includes a system for capturing, treating, recycling, and reusing water. And the third comprises three piers, each with a distinct purpose (supplying boats for tourist services, providing a space for contemplation, and offering a recreational area).
