The Santiago Apóstol Preschool in Albatera – in the comarca of Vega Baja, Alicante province – has been enlarged and renovated in accordance with a scheme drawn up by the local firm COR Architecture + Design. The original building, a single-level block with a gabled roof of ceramic tiles, is now accompanied by a second volume. The latter maintains the clear geometry of the former, striking up a dialogue between new and preexisting.
Between the two volumes, an intermediate space has been created, scenographic in nature, that functions as an area for meetings and other collective activities. This space incorporates a staircase that acts as a small grandstand, fostering interaction and participation among students. A porch extends the exterior space by extruding the geometry of the original construction. This element stands out for its intense pink color inside, which contrasts with the sobriety of the exterior facade.
Special attention is given to architectural scale so as to adapt to the perception and needs of children, creating multipurpose, inclusive, interconnected spaces that encourage autonomy, creativity, and active learning. The relationship between indoors and outdoors is fluid, allowing for a more open and dynamic educational experience.
The project responds to a change in the educational model, whereby the architectural environment becomes in itself a key pedagogical resource. The objective is to contribute to child development through spaces that stimulate children to participate in their schooling while reinforcing the role of the teacher as a guide in the learning process.
