The team formed by b720 Fermín Vázquez Arquitectos, Luis Machica Arquitectos, and DJ Arquitectura has won the competition to design Málaga’s new Plaza de la Marina and connect Parque de Málaga to the seafront.
This park and the palm-lined port promenade called Palmeral de las Sorpresas are currently disconnected by the priority given to vehicles, as well as by the grade discrepancy produced by Paseo de los Curas. The Málaga Coast Plan sets the bases for burying wheeled traffic and replacing it at ground level with a linear park that will reconcile the city with its waterfront and harbor. Called Ecosistema Litoral (Coastal Ecosystem), the awarded scheme to redefine Málaga's coastal front and tie the urban fabric to the port endeavors: to maximize connectivity of circulation routes; to establish a gradual transition between the elements that shape the zone; to give the Plaza de la Marina a new central presence and representational role within the city; and to harness resources equipped with systems for harvesting renewable energy sources and making the most of water. The two main strategies of the project involve the city-harbor nexus, through maximum permeability in pedestrian circulations; and the Malagueta-Marina axis, which links the Malagueta beach to the Heredia dock and serves as a landscape route.
Aside from activating public space, the project aims to enhance interaction between existing green spaces and encourage use of public transportation (the interurban bus station is placed underground), the bicycle, and pedestrian paths.
