The construction of this new facility in La Bouëxière, in France’s Brittany region, presents the opportunnity to reconsolidate and restructure the zone, creating a large sport and culture center that integrates existing amenities and reconnects the complex to the nearby neighborhoods. The new complex is structured in two differentiated volumes traversed by an axis that acts as a connector and a transition space.
The north volume, devoted to the athlete Marie-José Perec, is a sport pavilion with nine courts for badminton, volleyball, tennis, and basketball. Rectangular and unheated, it is covered with a four-pointed textile membrane, reaching a maximum height of 28 meters. This roof, with its inverted double curvature, induces natural ventilation and provides a soft, uniform light.
The south volume, which honors the dancer, singer, and actress Josephine Baker, is compact, lower, and energy-efficient. It features a dance room, a gym, a squash court, changing rooms, and technical spaces, not to mention a biomass boiler that supplies the entire complex with heating and hot water.
