The new Coal Drops Yard shopping district, located in the heart of King’s Cross next to Regent’s Canal, has been created through the refurbishment of two old rail warehouses built in the 19th century to receive coal for London as it arrived from the North of England. The design of Thomas Heatherwick, recently inaugurated, extends the gable roofs of the warehouses, resting them on a new, independent structure intertwined with the preexisting. The roofs rise and stretch to link the two viaducts, generating a new area over the yard and sheltering a large portion of the double-height space beneath, which becomes the central point of the development and can also host concerts and performances...
