This house addresses the climate of Puerto Vallarta on Mexico’s Pacific coast, where sunshine and humidity dominate one’s days and shade is a valuable asset, a refuge. From the start, the idea was for the dwelling, built with concrete, to embody the search for shelter and breeze. Here shade was thought of not only as a physical phenomenon, but also as an “emotional condition”: a promise of calm, a silent protection against the din of the world.
In an area lacking remarkable views – with the exception of a tree-lined plaza – architecture tends to turn towards cool interiors, minimizing the heat-intensifying effect of glazed surfaces. The language of the project is defined by the aesthetic of the void and by the clean composition.
On the ground floor are the bedrooms, the garage, and the service areas. Over this base, a double-height light box contains the social areas. Elevated patios function as terraces for contemplation, while the rooms are laid out around a central court, in pursuit of silence and natural ventilation.
A curved wall marks a welcoming threshold, with a tree greeting you like a flower arrangement. The house does not open out to the neighborhood, but seeks privacy. The house withdraws discreetly and offers its spaces as atmospheres for contemplation. Its architecture expressly pursues shade, both as a physical refuge and as a poetic expression.
