New House with Old Mill in Trenčín

The Czech firm RDTH Architekti —René Dlesk and Tamara Horová Kolaříková— has transformed an old mill and farm in Slovakia into a house, putting in wooden elements that refer to preexisting rural constructions.

Beside a small stream in Trenčín stands the ‘new house with old mill.’ The mill was too valuable to demolish but too large to reconstruct entirely, so only the oldest part and a fragment of the perimeter wall were preserved.

Additions made over the years, along with the farm buildings, were eliminated. The demolished pieces were replaced with timber structures that reinstated the original massing and material, but on a contemporary note. In the process, the complex was broken up into three parts connected by unequal gable roofs: the partly intact mill, the new-build family home, and the garage. These three volumes are arranged in a way that forms a triangular garden-and-yard space.
