Biosphere treehouse in Harads

Suspended between trees in the Swedish locality of Harads, about 50 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle, this lodge called Biosphere which is part of the Treehouse hotel is wrapped in 350 wooden birdhouses. Designed by the Danish firm Bjarke Ingels – in close collaboration with the Swedish ornithologist Ulf Öhman – the 34-meter suite is inside a cube crowned with a terrace which is reached by crossing a suspended bridge. This room is surrounded by a metal grid that supports the birdhouses, which, built in different sizes to accommodate a large variety of nesting birds, create a spherical form. Besides giving guests an interesting experience, the hut is expected to increase bird populations, which according to local inventories have been diminishing. Among the hotel’s other accommodations are rooms designed by Tham & Videgård Arkitekter and Snøhetta.
