Villa Vught

Villa Vught

Mecanoo

To go unnoticed but without sacrificing an architectural language of strong personality: this was the fundamental consideration in the course of designing the villa in Vught, a municipality in the southern Netherlands. To this end, rather than concentrating on a single volume, the residence breaks up into a series of constructions arranged in a way that brings typical Dutch farms to mind. Because the different constructions are connected by an underground corridor, the fragmentation does not affect domestic functionality.

The inspiration of traditional typologies also explains the faceted composition of the house – in allusion to the pitched roof while creating a rich play of volumes – and the particular materials used: bronze and aluminum to coat the envelope, with a grooved texture – expressing the construction system – that recalls the corrugated metal roofs of many farmhouses in the region.
