Villa Dolunay in Muğla

Foster + Partners

With its large undulating timber roof cantilevering 7,5 meters, this private house designed by Norman Foster’s firm is partly embedded into the terrain close to the Aegean Sea, in the southwestern Turkish province of Mu?la. Carefully inserted into a rugged natural environment, it is designed to optimize the spectacular views while using the uneven ground to raise a low building whose two levels are connected inside by a spiral staircase built with Portuguese limestone. Stone and wood seal up the north side completely, whereas on the south the house faces the sea with sliding glass panels. When these are open, all obstacles between interior and exterior spaces are eliminated. To echo the immediate surroundings, the villa uses stone and wood in the brown and gray tones of nearby rock formations and sand beaches.
