Vaíllo + Irigaray wins competition for Basque Museum in Bilbao

Vaillo + Irigaray

The Navarre-based practice of Antonio Vaíllo and Juan Luis Irigaray has come first in the contest to renovate the Basque Museum of Bilbao. Drawn up in collaboration with Jesús Moreno y Asociados and MOEST Arquitectos, the scheme works on the historical constructions that form the current museum, which all in all encompass 8,000 square meters. It reinstates the continuous longitudinal bay of the 17th-century building and seeks to dignify the large cloister space as the hub of the exhibition space. To maximize functional flexibility, the four differentiated volumes are connected by elements that facilitate internal intercommunication. Wood is the main material of the intervention, which contemplates using it in a ‘hollow trunk’ structure and in restructuring the roof with large trusses.
