Mixed House in Beijing
ArchStudioThe Chinese firm ArchStudio has renovated and enlarged a traditional house with a courtyard, named Mixed House, on the outskirts of Beijing. Led by Han Wenquang and Li Xiaoming, the project involved restoring two constructions standing on the north and south of the site, and raising a timber volume as a connector, crowned with an undulating roof. The original spatial pattern, with a front courtyard and a rear one, was reorganized to form six courtyards differing in scale, landscaping, and function. The livable spaces face these courtyards with glazed or sliding panels.
The materials – recycled bricks, wood, bamboo – are left as they are in order to highlight the mix of new, restored, and old. The arrangement of pavements emphasizes the sense of continuity between interiors and exteriors. The roof's red vermiculite-coated metal pieces are in dialogue with the surrounding roofs.
