With their ‘Three Strategies’ scheme Javier Alejo Hernández Ayllón, Verónica Paradela Pernas, and Javier de Andrés de Vicente have won the ideas competition called by the Consell de Mallorca’s Sustainability and Environment Department, in collaboration with the Balearic Islands Institute of Architects, for the construction of a mountain shelter and agroforestry training school in the Finca de Raixa estate of the Majorcan municipality of Buñola.
Conceived as a new chapter of the history of the Possessió de Raixa, the project addresses new needs (functional, social, energy…) while respecting the heritage value of the complex and the landscape around it. It is based on three complementary strategies: refurbishment, recovering the volume, form, and textures of the complex through local building techniques, crafts, and materials, and removing partitions and poor-quality additions in the process of consolidating structures; reconstruction, with the reinstalling of those missing pieces that can upgrade the premises; and reconfiguration, paying attention to accessibility requirements, to provide a shelter for 50 hikers in the houses of the owner, and an agroforestry training center in linearly interconnected constructions leading to the wooded zone on the north and the garden along the way.
The area to refurbish covers about 1,530 square meters, the budget for execution is estimated by the Consell de Mallorca at 3,600,000 euros maximum, and construction work is to start in 2022.
