A winner has been announced for the international competition to design a new building for the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST). The firm of Fabrizio Barozzi and Alberto Veiga has carried the day over its four co-finalists: Moneo Brock + Baas + CasaSolo; Pich-Aguilera + 2BMFG Arquitectes + JC Ingenieros; BIG + IDOM; and Woods Bagot.
On the site of the Antic Mercat del Peix, the BIST building is the first piece of ‘Ciudadella del Coneixement,’ an initiative of Barcelona City Hall and Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) to make the Parc de la Ciutadella, in the center of Barcelona, a center for multidisciplinary scientific research.
Construction will kick off in 2022 and this will be Barozzi Veiga’s first work in the city of Barcelona. With a built area of close to 25,000 square meters distributed in several floors, the building is defined by the eaves that mark its horizontal formation, and incorporates solutions addressing environmental requirements.
The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) comprises seven Catalonian research organizations: the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), the Catalan Institute of Chemical Research (ICIQ), the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the Institute for High Energy Physics (IFAE), and the Institute of Biomedical Research of Barcelona (IRB Barcelona).
