Working from offices in Oslo and New York, the firm Snøhetta has won the commission to draw up a masterplan for a new neighborhood in the south of the Hungarian capital. Its entry was selected in a competition organized on an invitation-only basis, in which sixteen other teams participated. Connected to the Danube River by canals, the 135-hectare site – shaped like an island and abounding in broad green zones – will house 12,000 students and include educational, recreational, and sports installations, including a stadium with room for 15,000 spectators. Creating a new water canal, the development of the peninsula is part of the larger Budapest 2030 plan.
