Designs for Sidewalk Toronto

Sidewalk Labs – a subordinate company of Alphabet, the American multinational conglomerate whose major subsidiary is Google, has developed Sidewalk Toronto, a mixed-use community in the capital of the Canadian province of Ontario which seeks be a model of the smart and sustainable city that uses renewable energy sources, combining urban design with digital technology. The first part of the project is Quayside, a waterfront neighborhood of 2,500 dwellings – 40% of which are to be affordable apartments – that includes a series of wooden buildings designed by the firms Snøhetta and Heatherwick Studio. The Snøhetta project shows two high-rises connected by a curved volumen that shelters a covered square, and the Heatherwick proposal presents a plan for Google’s Canadian headquarters, featuring curved balconies and an innovation center.
