Fine Arts Museum in Vannes

Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos

The firm led by Fuensanta Nieto and Enrique Sobejano, which runs offices in Madrid and Berln, has landed first prize in the competition to build the new Museum of Fine Arts of the city of Vannes, in Brittany, with Richard Faure as associate architect.

With a total area of 2,700 square meters, the project restores and refurbishes the Château de l’Hermine – built in the 19th century over the ruins of the 14th-century town wall; and enlarges the premises through volumes materialized in a metallic skin. The new extension forms a public space within the rampart, between the medieval perimeter and the historical center, by means of a longitudinal volume that adapts the pitches of its roofs to the irregular geometry of the surrounding context. The intervention respects the original architecture, dialogues with the historical buildings, and transforms the museum’s image in the city.
