The 13th Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism (BIAU) was held in Lima (Perú) in 2024 and themed ‘Climates: Actions for Good Living.’ The installation Sobremesas (after-meal table talks) was created for this event. It is a table thought up as a flexible space, open for appropriation, around which to share meals and converse, fostering community interaction. This piece was designed and produced by the studio Salazar Sequero Medina in collaboration with Leggett & Cahuas, along with the team of curators of the 13th BIAU ((Elizabeth Añaños, María Arquero, Gary Leggett, Luis Rodríguez, Emilio Ontiveros, and José Luis Villanueva).
During the biennial, the pavilion – based on an adaptable modular system –accommodated happenings where a stand-out was the role of the ‘Red de Ollas Comunes’ (network of communal cookers), an initiative which through community kitchens addresses the scarcity of food in Perú’s vulnerable informal settlements. Subsequently, the pavilion’s components, designed to be reused, were donated to the network. The installation was made with locally sourced wood, and conceived to be easy to assemble, dismantle, and transport.
