Miller apartment building in Maastricht

Martens Willems & Humblé Architecten

This project by Martens Willems & Humblé Architecten – with Maikel Willems and Rik Martens at the helm – is a residential building located at the boundary between an old working-class neighborhood and De Groene Loper (The Green Carpet), a new boulevard.

With the construction of a tunnel for the existing motorway and the development of the wide and leafy boulevard over it, the neighborhood had to be sewn to the new constructions at several points. Two rows of two-story social housing completed in 2022 by Martens Willems & Humblé, combined with the new apartment block by this same firm, form the northern edge of Groene Loper. Both phases of construction used brick in reddish tones to unify the complex, with variations in the joints, lighter in the first phase. The tallest of the new constructions has curved corners containing stairwells, connected inside by galleries. The south side opens out to the surroundings through terraces.
