Revitalization of Landbouwbelang area in Maastricht

The team formed by the Spanish practice of Tuñón y Albornoz and the Belgian firm Dhoore-Vanweert Architecten has won the public tender to revamp the Landbouwbelang block in the Dutch city of Maastricht. Covering a built area of 40,500 square meters, the plan seeks to architecturally unify a complex environment with different scales where new housing developments are mixed with industrial constructions refurbished to accommodate a performing arts institute, besides facilities for sports and recreation. Three buildings contain 120 apartments and a residence for 80 students, with vernacular references that give the complex a domestic and local character. The huge harbor cranes left in the area are maintained to identity features of the place, and one of them offers the public an overlook towards the Meuse River.
