Utopicus Clementina coworking in Barcelona
Izaskun Chinchilla

In Barcelona, at Calle Bretón de los Herreros 9, this coworking office building opens out southward to a courtyard presided by a tree whose fruit, the clementine, gives the facility its name. For the design, the Madrid practice of Izaskun Chinchilla took inspiration from the rural history of the Gràcia neighborhood and from Catalan Art Nouveal tradition, exemplified by Antoni Gaudí's Casa Vicens close by. Hence the fine ceramic cladding of the facade and interior walls. The clay tones show the original raw material of the semi-vitrified tiles, which combine with the wood of the furniture and the brightly colored fabrics covering the rails to create a lively work atmosphere.

Solar panels cover most of the 384-square-meter building's energy needs, minimizing consumption through passive systems like natural ventilation. The centrally placed stairs are crowned on the roof with a large glazed skylight and a solar chimney, ensuring air renewal.
