Set within the Riviera Maya’s Aldea Zamá, in the Mexican city of Tulum, 38 apartments make up this residential complex designed by the firm Sordo Madaleno. The objective of the project was to blend architecture into the natural environment of the site, respecting its topography and vegetation. The construction’s footprint and impact are minimized by raising the concrete structure over the ground. Three parallel volumes contain the living units, which measure between 90 and 150 square meters and are interwoven in opposing directions to form a grid and create open-air intermediate spaces (gardens, terraces, and patios). The complex is crowned with an upper level that accommodates communal outdoor amenities, including a bar, hammocks, a pool, and a grill. In the tropical climate of Tulum, temperatures are kept agreeable by the lattices and the building’s clever integration with nature. The concrete structure is combined with local materials and finishes, making the economy of the area part of the construction process.
