Notre-Dame-des-Miracles, Mauriac

The Madrid practice of José Ignacio Linazasoro and Ricardo Sánchez has won the competition for the commission to refurbish of the area around the Basilica of Our Lady of Miracles, a Romanesque work in the historical quarter of Mauriac, in France’s Auvergne region. The zone encompasses a number of squares and streets currently saturated by vehicular traffic, and includes the 19th-century town hall building and several houses, one dating back to the 12th century.

The project tries to upgrade elements that embody the history of the place. It shows ruins of the church of a medieval monastery under what is now Place Georges Pompidou, which presents two levels and features a fountain recalling a preexisting one. The new pavements help to express the overlapping of the area’s various periods of construction, combing calade of the Middle Ages with large slabs of neoclassical tradition.
