The Madrid practice of José Ignacio Linazasoro and Richard Sánchez has won first prize in the competition to revamp the area around the Romanesque Basilica of Notre-Dame-du-Pont, located along a French stretch of the Way of St. James, the pilgrim’s route to Santiago de Compostela, in Clermont-Ferrand, capital of central France’s Puy-de-Dôme department. Drawn up in collaboration with the Parisian firm Septembre Architecture, the winning project proposes a series of subtle interventions at given points to regenerate this zone of the city’s historic center composed of: the Rue de Port, a sunken square parallel to it, and the Place du Port itself. Between the Rue du Port and the sunken square stand two abandoned buildings that will be turned into an interpretation center for the basilica. The plaza, which is the main accessway to the basilica, and the Place du Port currently come in contact by means of a wall which will be replaced by a belvedere terrace, and beneath this will go a hall belonging to the interpretation center, opening on to the sunken square. This square, a gathering point for Camino pilgrims, is to be paved anew, and a fountain and a bench will make their stop there more welcoming.
